Black wasp? - Sphex pensylvanicus

Black wasp? - Sphex pensylvanicus
Solon, Johnson County, Iowa, USA
August 4, 2015
Size: Over 1"
There are multiple wasps (?) circling the butterfly bush. Seems like they are chasing off or scaring away the Monarchs in the area. The butterflies approach the plant and the insects swarm and the butterflies leave.
