Chlaenius emarginatus larva - Chlaenius emarginatus

Chlaenius emarginatus larva - Chlaenius emarginatus
Fauquier County, Virginia, USA
August 5, 2015
2nd instar. A very active little critter... I was lucky to get a clear shot, it stood still for only a couple seconds.

To me, those mouthparts under the mandibles look abnormally large, but maybe I'm projecting adult characters onto it.

I've put both mealworm larvae and drosophila pupae in the container, which I assume it ate before molting. I've yet to observe it feeding, though. This is the only individual that has survived, out of three I originally found.

Sadly perished
In case anyone was waiting for more pictures, this larva died about a week after this photo was posted. Still, I'm glad to have larvae in my collection for this species, which as far as I can tell has never been described or illustrated aside from these photos here.
