Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
May 21, 2007
Size: about 2 1/2 cm
I came across what I believe is a Ctenucha virginica caterpillar preparing to pupate on a hinge on our shed door. It would turn around and pull tufts of hairs from itself and then place them, slowing building its cocoon, which took almost 30 hours to complete. It was quite interesting to watch. How long will it be until an adult emerges?

Nice series!
I'd guess you'll wait a couple of weeks before the adult emerges. Our data map shows the last (presumably adult) images we have from your area are from July, so that might mark the end of the adult flight season.

Thank you.
I see the caterpillars fairly often, but I don't think I've ever seen an adult, so I'll have to keep watching and hope to catch the moment. :)

Hi Sharon!
Great series, I learn something new here every day!
Regards, Linda

Thank
you for your kind comments. It was a joy to watch. :)
