Unknown family - Tribolium audax
Baxter State Park, Piscataquis County, Maine, USA

Sorry for the crappy picture. I can get better ones next week. This was mixed in with some Trogossitids I'm going through. I don't believe it is a trogo, but I'm not sure what family it belongs to. Any ideas to get me started?

Tribolium of sorts, i presume
a practical rule of thumb for anyone reasonably familiar with beetles: if "not sure what family it belongs to," look in tenebs; 95 chances out of 100 you'll find it there

Thanks!!
It keys out to T. audax using (1) which would be a new one for the guide. I'll double check with a better scope and take some decent images of the diagnostic features. Stay tuned.

any progress?

Three years later
and your comment reminded me to look at these again! I have two specimens. They are certainly T. audax. I'll set them aside so as to remember to take better pictures.

thanks -- audax makes sense
