promethea moth - Callosamia promethea - female

promethea moth - Callosamia promethea - Female
Epping, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, USA
July 2, 2015
Size: 10 cm wingspan
I was in my backyard looking for moth caterpillars on the night of August 8, 2014, when I spotted a cocoon hanging in a beaked hazelnut (Corylus cornuta) bush. I thought it might be a silk moth cocoon but wasn't sure. I was curious enough to find out so I cut it off the branch and put it in a rearing container and it overwintered. On July 2, 2015 I was checking on some other overwintering pupae I had and saw the moth that eclosed was a beautiful female promethea moth. I took some photos of her and then released her onto the same hazelnut plant I found her on.
