Laphria sp, apparently
Excellent photos of one of the bumblebee mimic robber flies in the Laphria genus, it seems.

It was not easy to get a good
It was not easy to get a good size estimate as it was quite wary compared to some of my local Ohio Laphria. I have photographed L. thoracica and it was definitely smaller than that species which would, I imagine, rule out L. grossa. For what its worth, gross is not on Herschel Raney's Michigan robber list, http://www.hr-rna.com/RNA/Rfly%20pages/Robber%20list%20Michigan.htm

Thank you for the response. That is a superb shot...can I ask what lens you were using? And did you fill flash? the details are remarkably clear and crisp.

I apologize for my overly simplistic response to you about the ID. I didn't realize you already knew it was a Laphria and see now that you are way beyond me in robber fly know-how.
