Texas - Beetle? - Macrosiagon cruenta

Texas - Beetle? - Macrosiagon cruenta
Lake Jackson, Brazoria County, Texas, USA
August 9, 2015
Size: ~15mm
Found on Erygium yuccafolium (Rattlesnake Master). Head stayed buried in florets so couldn't get better shots.

Have searched for hours and can't find anything with the natty cut-away elytra, if it even is a beetle.

Assistance with ID would be appreciated. Thank you.
