There were several of these around. This pair is on sugar maple. A later similar pair seemed to be mating.

Probably C. vau, though the dark wing band makes me wonder. The male is on the left, lots of taxonomically tricky sexual dimorphism in this genus. Were there any white oaks around?

 
Yes, this was one of the small saplings in
a white oak area of the woodland. The woodland is dominated by red oak, but white, bur, and swamp white are all present.
