Gray Hairstreak - Strymon melinus

Gray Hairstreak - Strymon melinus
Road south from Rt 326 to Rt 121, Levy County, Florida, USA
July 27, 1993
We thought this might be Satyrium calanus but Joel quickly identified it as Strymon melinus with a torn back wing to confuse the identification.

Gray Hairstreak
I'm pretty sure this is actually the Gray Hairstreak Strymon melinus (1). The square orange patch with a black circle at the base and the single postmedian line (rather than two that form a band as in Banded Hairstreak and similar species of Satyrium) are pretty good marks.

This one had me a bit confused about the hindwing pattern until I noticed a piece of the hindwing is missing - looks like the "fake head" managed to fake out a bird!
