Nigel, this surely looks like
to me, but it may be uncommon, so I don't feel I can place it without confirmation. I am sure Steve Nanz will look at this Sub-famiy soon and he would be able to tell for sure.

you're a marvel! This has to be correct; the images match perfectly. No wonder I did not find it. I failed to recognize it as a Litter moth and I although searched for Noctuids in all the adjacent states, there are no sightings in New England. Uncommon indeed! I will leave it here for Steve Nanz to confirm.
