Orange Sulphur - Colias eurytheme - Male
Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada
September 13, 2004
On New England Aster; I think the other guy may be a Tarnished Plant Bug. According to Ron Gatrelle, President of International Lepidoptera Survey, Orange Sulphurs can be distinguished from Clouded Sulphurs by looking at the underside of the forewing. Any comments on his method of ID?

Great capture
Beautiful images are becoming so commonplace here that it's easy to take them for granted.

I checked all six of my butterfly books and Gatrelle's comments held for most, but not all, of the specimens pictured. It seems more consistent for the apical part of the forewing, but even that failed for C. philodice in the Audubon guide (plate 114)(1). Glassberg specifically mentions that C. philodice generally has a narrower black border (2).
