Glad you encountered this neat asilid. I was quite thrilled to run into these guys in the Oregon desert about 3 yrs ago (actually, maybe both yours and mine were "gals"?):

BTW...on a different topic...Alice & I are hoping Margarethe & you will post some nice photos of those impressive Cicindela obsoleta santaclarae from the grassy area above the lake in Prescott...since neither of us got good shots (I didn't get any!). Apparently those tiger beetles are fairly rare...there are very few posts of the species on BugGuide. And Prescott is near the far western corner of their range, as given in this map from Pearson, Knisley, & Kazilek(1).

I see a few of these asilids each time we visit this spot in Utah (and nowhere else yet!). Will post my shot of the mating pair of Cicindela now. I've been very slow in working through my images! Yes, it does seem we were on the edge of its range.
