white bug on Torrey Pine - Cryptolaemus montrouzieri

white bug on Torrey Pine - Cryptolaemus montrouzieri
la jolla, san diego County, California, USA
August 6, 2015
Size: 1/4 inch
Crawling on a tree (might have been a torrey pine) in the afternoon. The white seemed to rub off when I moved one with a leaf. I saw about 5 to 7 over about 20 minutes. They seemed to mostly stay deeper in the bark.

ladybird larva
There are a few kinds of ladybird related larvae that look like this. If there were mealybugs then absolutely, probably cryptolaemus but if there were aphids it could be another species. Either way it is a good guy, eating your pests.

Mealybug destroyer
I am not an expert but have contributed hundreds of photos to the guide and I believe , after coming across a similar looking fellow and having it identified , that this is indeed a good and beneficial insect called the Mealybug destroyer . Good photo .
