Dung beetle accompanied by phoretic/kleptoparasitic flies

Dung beetle accompanied by phoretic/kleptoparasitic flies
Florida Canyon, trail alongside the SRER (Santa Rita Mountains), Pima County, Arizona, USA
October 25, 2014
I observed this dung beetle roll and then partially bury a ball of dung in Florida Canyon last autumn, during which time it was accompanied by a variable number of flies on its back. However, once it began to bury the dung ball, the flies moved from the beetle's back to a nearby rock and eventually onto the dung itself. I believe that the beetle is in the genus Canthon and that the flies may be Sphaerocerids.
