Philothus or other? - Philolithus

Philothus or other? - Philolithus
Sacatara Canyon, Tejon Ranch, Kern County, California, USA
August 21, 2015
Is this guy Philothus? I remember some other genera were similar but can't recall names.

The elytra on these guys is very shiny, I thought at first it was just the release of their "stink" which often makes Eleodes shiny, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Arid valley grassland habitat.

Is there a key for these guys?
Gotta be doable.

Certainly isn't densicollis or morbillosus. It may not even be actuosus going on the elytra.
