Both species:
Light brown, unmarked pronotum
Dark brown or black elytra with narrow pale rear margin
S. kansanus:
Elongated shape
Prosternal carinae converging anteriorly
5th abodominal sternum feebly emarginate
S. cervicalis:
Oval shape
Prosternal carinae not converging anteriorly
5th abdominal sternum strongly emarginate

Map (1) Remarks
Slightly separable by range: only S. kansanus occurs in northern New England, Wisconsin, and Colorado, while only S. cervicalis occurs in Georgia and Florida.
The species are almost identical dorsally; a ventral image is needed for certain identification where the ranges overlap.
