Weevil in Barrie - Curculio rubidus

Weevil in Barrie - Curculio rubidus
Barrie, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada
August 21, 2015
Size: 4 mm

Size of Weevil
Sorry, the size I put was just an estimate. I see that this species is normally not much longer than 3 mm, which this could have been. I could measure the wrinkles in my finger (where I photographed it) if necessary, and get a better estimate of size.

Sorry, no, I didn't collect a specimen, but the park I found it in is only a block from my house and I could try to find more.

This weevil first found me....it landed on my leg and then I caught it for photos.

I took half a dozen other photos, but this is probably the best one.

Brad got it absolutely right
might be country record, i'll notify the colleagues

Moved from Nut and Acorn Weevils.

neat one indeed

Moved
Moved from ID Request. hoping this is Curculio rubidus; was size measured or just an estimate?

Curculio rubidus
Yes, this is Curculio rubidus and its the second Canadian record as far as I know (first for Ontario). Did you keep the specimen?

Paper Published
Just to let anyone know that the paper mentioning this record is now published in the journal Zookeys. de Tonnancour, P., R.S. Anderson, P. Bouchard, C. Chantal, S. Dumont, and R. Vigneault. 2017. New Curculionoidea (Coleoptera) records for Quebec, Canada. Zookeys 681: 95-117.
