Sciota celtidella caterpillar on sugarberry - Sciota rubrisparsella

Sciota celtidella caterpillar on sugarberry - Sciota rubrisparsella
Flowermound, Denton County, Texas, USA
August 28, 2015
Size: 8-16 mm
These images were initially identified as likely Sciota celtidella (Hulst 1890) by James McDermott. They were very abundant in the Grapevine/Flowermound area of Tarrant and Denton counties this July, where they defoliated Celtis trees at the DFW airport and along streets in the area. Adults emerging from collected caterpillars, however, were subsequently identified as a mixiture of Sciota rubrisparsella and Pococera sp. (probably euphemella), by Terry Harrison of Bugguide and by James McDermott. The exact identification of these caterpillars is, therefore, uncertain.
