Wasp on Asian Pear - Vespula alascensis - female

Wasp on Asian Pear - Vespula alascensis - Female
Bay Center 98527 Willapa, Pacific County, Washington, USA
August 29, 2015
Size: Body length ± 14 mm
Interesting little wasp which was attracted to fallen asian pears in my yard which had been partially chewed by deer or pecked by crows. Very docile as you could pick up the fruit and they would continue to feed. Are they ground dwelling? This specimen although looking half dead was actually in fine shape. I gave it a little shot of CO² as I do some active moths which allows 1 to 3 minutes of greatly reduced activity such as reposing on their back. Specimen is on a1/4 graph grid (6.35 mm) so body length ± 14 mm. When released it went back to a partially eaten asian pear.
