Unknown Caterpillars in NJ - Hemileuca maia

Size: 1 in.
Found in the Pine Barrens in NJ. I think the tree is Black Jack Oak. These may be Gypsy Moths, but I'm hoping for something different.

and on hostplant and appearance, Hemileuca maia would seem the most likely.

Difficult to see the spines clearly,
but we think we do see the needle spines of the Buck Moth, Hemileuca, which would feed in aggregations on oak! Check in the guide here

What do y'all think of H. lucina?

Whatever they are, they are quite young, but on some of them you can see the dark reddish orange coloration of the spines.
