Larva - Strymon melinus

Larva - Strymon melinus
Alameda County, California, USA
August 19, 2015
Found in late afternoon August 18 on pod of harvested pole bean, Phaseolus vulgaris var. Romano, and confined (with the pod) in outdoor terrarium with intentions of photographing it the next day, when there'd be more light. On the 19th, however, the larva had eaten its way so far into the pod that only its rear end was visible.

This larva produced a prodigious quantity of light green, moist-looking frass balls every day. The darker, shrunken objects are the previous day's production. The larva was active diurnally.
