Myzinum (Thynnid Wasp) - Myzinum obscurum -

Size: 15-16 mm

While I was taking the photos, I thought this was a wasp, as there were numerous recognizable wasps feeding on the Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum). However, on inspecting the pictures, I think it may be a sawfly, but since I know nothing about them, any help identifying it would be greatly appreciated. The size was smaller than Polistes fuscatus, which was also feeding, but I'm not certain as to exact size.

Thank you so much for the help! It _was_ a wasp. Apparently in my hours of searching I just never ended up on the right guide page.

Very excellent to see that we may have even fewer May and June (scarab) beetles here next year, too! :)

If you have time, could you tell me if I'm correct in the assumption from the range info given in the guide that this is a native species? Thank you again for your help. You made my day!

Range

This is one of two very similar species, both of which are native. The Info Page will usually note if a species is introduced. However, I also checked this article, just to be safe.

Really appreciate you taking the time, Ken. :) Have been learning more about native plants and accompanying insects recently. Didn't even realize there was a non-native species list on the guide. Thanks for sharing!
