eastern tiger moth? - Apantesis figurata

eastern tiger moth? - Apantesis figurata
Chesterfield County, Virginia, USA
May 25, 2007
Size: about quarter-sized
I initially thought this was a sweetheart underwing, because of the deep red color of the underwings. But the outerwings are more like a tiger moth. However, all the tiger moths in the guide have a much more complex pattern of outer wing markings.

I'm sorry the underwing shot turned out blurry.
