Larva getting ready to pupate - Limenitis arthemis

Larva getting ready to pupate - Limenitis arthemis
Fairmont Hot Springs, Deer Lodge County, Montana, USA
May 27, 2007
Found hanging from a wooden fence rail. Lots of cottonwood in the area, not sure what the host plant was.

Primo! Caterpillar Lynette
Moved from Butterflies. One of my favorites.

Admiral
It's going to be whichever species of "White Admiral" you have in your area. I don't recall if it's L. arthemis, L. weidemeyeri, or L. lorquini.

I guess that leaves
Limenitis arthemis arthemis and Limenitis arthemis rubrofasciata? I don't really know what butterfly is found in that area, as I'm not there very often.

I think
that far west it would have to be L. arthemis rubrofasciata.

cool image!
cool picture! It looks maybe like a red spotted purple caterpillar to me but im no expert.

Thanks
Using Caterpillars in the Field and Garden....I am guessing that this is actually Weidemeyer's Admiral. Red-spotted isn't found this far South in MT, and I think it's too far East for Lorquin's Admiral.
