robberfly - Proctacanthus brevipennis - male

robberfly - Proctacanthus brevipennis - Male
Spring Green, Sauk County, Wisconsin, USA
September 7, 2015
Size: 5 cm
Large robberfly. I see Proctacanthus hinei in the area but generally much earlier in the year. This specimen was very sluggish as though maybe it is on its last legs. The abdomen of P. hinei is almost all red where this one is only red at the tip. All other species of robberfly and tiger beetles at the site were very active. Temperature was low 80's and about 2:30 pm

Proctacanthus
male, likely brevipennis.

Proctacanthus
definitely looks like a Proctacanthus....
