Unknown insect that resembles a crane fly - Tipula abdominalis - Female
Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
September 16, 2015
Size: 1"-3"
I found this insect outside of my home in Northeast Philadelphia. To me, it resembles a crane fly, but its body seems much thicker and bigger. Its thorax and abdomen are a bright orange color. It also has a pointy end to the abdomen. I'm not sure if it is a stinger or an ovipositor. It has very long legs and wings. I'm very interested in finding out what kind of insect this is, especially since I've never seen one before. Thank you!
