a female Cibolacris
Perhaps these ones from the "slickrock" country of the Colorado Plateaus are just a regional form or subspecies of Cibolacris parviceps, but they are quite distinctive, and may represent a different, as yet unnamed species. They need more study. They are very similar to C. samalayuca from New Mexico, Texas and Chihuahua, but they occur hundreds of miles to the northwest of that species, which is also very closely similar to C. parviceps. For the moment, I've segregated them under their own heading on BugGuide.

Moved from Short-horned Grasshoppers.
