Beetle - Odonteus - female

Beetle - Odonteus - Female
Block Island, Washington County, Rhode Island, USA
September 1, 2015
In pitfall trap in leaf litter 9/1-9/4. To be sent shortly to Brad Barnd.

Odonteus sp., female
Genus ID confirmed from specimen, now a photo-voucher. Thanks Aaron.

As Blaine says, our current knowledge of the genus does not generally allow for ID of the females unless they are associated with males (with a few exceptions).

I see at least two species recorded from Rhode Island (cornigerus and liebecki). Only one species, liebecki, was found from surveys of the MA offshore islands (Goldstein & Simmons 2002).

Thanks
It's also the only species known from Block Island(1). Hopefully I'll find a male this year.

Moved from Beetles.

Odonteus sp.
female; further ID probably not possible as male genitalia usually required for definitive identification. Perhaps the location can rule out some options...
