Size: approx 1 inch
Found early cool morning (69 degrees) splayed on top of zinnia flower. Abdomen appears to have black/white stripes, but couldn't see clearly without disturbing insect. A beetle-line tube (like a straw, but hair-thin)from under eyes down to petal. Wings appeared to be clear.

It's a Robber fly
but I'm not sure which one past that; maybe something in Dasypogoninae
