Pretty big, but not measured. About thumbnail size, or bigger maybe?

likely Disholcaspis gall
Your gall does look similar to
Disholcaspis
galls. I've only had the occasion once, briefly, to see
Q. turbinella
, in the New York Mountains in the eastern Mojave (not too far from where you were). So I'm not that familiar with the galls that occur on them. I didn't see this gall in the New York Mtns (doesn't mean it's not there though).
Weld's Cynipid Galls of the Southwest
(
1
)
lists 3 described
Disholcaspis
species (
rubens
,
spissa
,
edura
) on
turbinella
, and also an undescribed
Disholcaspis
. There are no descriptions of the galls (would have to dig up the species descriptions to find those), but there are not-so-great drawings of the galls. None of them look quite like yours but I'm not positive none of those are your gall. There's also a chance that this could be
D. simulata
, even though it's not listed in Weld -- I'm a little doubtful, but maybe. A view of the larval chamber (like
this
) would provide more information.
Weld lists 4 other detachable stem galls on
Q. turbinella
, all of which seem pretty different from your gall.
Hopefully someday I'll get a chance to spend more time around
Quercus turbinella
, and maybe can get a better sense of what galls they have.
Thanks for sharing this on BugGuide, and for including information about what species of oak this is on.
