Which wasp, please? - Cryptus albitarsis - Female
Herring Run Park, Baltimore City County, Maryland, USA
May 31, 2007
Size: mid
I observed it dragging its behind across that leaf.

Moved
Moved from Cryptinae.

Moved
Moved from Ichneumon Wasps.

Ichneumon wasp.
Female ichneumon wasp.

Is
she leaving a scent trail?

Not really a trail...
But a scent, sure. This pheromone can theoretically have one of these two functions:
- advertising: so that conspecific males are aware of her presence (this would then be a virgin female).
- warning: so that conspecific females "know" this plant has already been visited and all potential host larvae already parasitized. This second option seems more likely.
