ID help much appreciated

"On the large size" sounds right for this species. They can be very large, much bigger than any Leucania.

Too long?
Leucania was my first thought too - perhaps L. linita or L. phragmitidicola. But scanning BG and MPG images of Leucania sp. shows they all seem to have a wingspan of 30-35 mm. At 28 mm long, this moth would have a 50 - 60 mm wingspan which I think is way out of range.

3.3 to 5 cm
Leucania multilinea is reported to have a wingspan of 50 mm. I also found this moth with a 50 mm wingspan but unreported in your area - flight time is correct. Rhizedra lutosa - Large Wainscot - Hodges#9447.2

Looks Promising
L. multilinea (on MPG) has the wrong pattern of black dots, but Rhizedra lutosa not only looks right but has also been reported (on MPG) from Rhode Island and Cape Cod. I think my moth is still on the large size, but this is certainly a good possibility. Many thanks for your most helpful input.
