On Telegraph Weed (Heterotheca grandiflora) in sage scrub at the Claremont Colleges' Bernard Field Station in an area that is recovering from a fire two years previously. Any information will be greatly appreciated!

I'm sure you're right – no wonder they didn't look like any of the wasps I know! I've changed the title from "wasps" to "bees" and moved the images to Dianthidium. Since none of the BugGuide California Dianthidium have been identified to species, I think it's unlikely that the identification will go any further.
