Lasiocampidae: Malacosma disstria - Malacosoma disstria

Lasiocampidae: Malacosma disstria - Malacosoma disstria
Turtle River State Park, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
September 24, 2015
Size: Length ~ 1.5 cm
This specimen is Forest Tent Caterpillar Moth (7698) is particularly unusual because it is the only September observation of this species found for North Dakota. I stepped on this moth quite accidently while examining several examples of Sunira bicolorago. This moth was attracted to MV light along with many Sunira. The specimen was fresh and pliable--not stiff or rigid--suggesting that it was actually inadvertently killed by my footfall. This specimen was pinned, and will be deposited in the NDSIRC at NDSU (contact Jerry Fauske for more information).
