Actually

This is a fly in the family Nemestrinidae, genus Neorhynchocephalus [from the red book]. Nemestrinid wing venation is very distinct in that most of the veins end before the tip of the wing. Cool photo!

Nemest

This is the family that one must bypass in the big Triplehorn Diptera key each time you key any fly. After antenna and empodia you come to the wing venation split of venation peculiar or wing venation normal.

Only six NA species in three genera in the family. All out west and all rare. Love to see one. Incidentally, no members of this family are pictured in either Marshall or the Kaufman guide.

No good images until now!

This is far and away the very best image I have seen of any member of this family. We had 'one' shot submitted for possible use in our Kaufman guide, but it was a hovering blur....I did see these in Missouri, Herschel, near the Arkansas border, in glades. Actually, I 'heard' them before I saw them!
