Variable Checkerspot - Euphydryas anicia--c - Female
Roaring Springs, Harney County, Oregon, USA

AKA Variable Checkerspot Euphydryas chalcedona. I have yet to find an image matching this one. Very confusing.
a digitalized 35mm slide

Sorry about the double move and missed identification.
This one bothered me, because it didn't look quite right for spp. bernadetta nor wallacensis, which meet somewhere near or just south of where this was taken. I was thinking it was E. chalcedona because of the lack of orange, but I forgot that the E. anicia from eastern Oregon and Washington tend to be almost white with black stripes. Otherwise, because the black is limited to narrow stripes, there is a resemblance to other E. anicia subspecies (sort of like ssp. eurytion or hopfingeri with most of the orange changed to white).

Subspecies veaziae sometimes has almost no orange at all, and can look even more white than this one. Regardless of how the name is published, and the narrowness of the black markings, these still look a lot like inland E. chalcedona to me.

Bottom line - these are very confusing butterflies!

Moved from Euphydryas chalcedona bernadetta.

Thank you for straightening me out on this butterfly. Confusing is the word.
