8957 Eyed Paectes? - Balsa malana

8957 Eyed Paectes? - Balsa malana
Magaguadavic, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada
July 18, 2010
Size: 1.5 cm
A small caterpillar that resembles EUTELLIIDAE Eutelliinae: Paectes oculatrix - 8957 Eyed Paectes. This is the only Paectes that could probably occur in New Brunswick. Locations in NB and NS according to maps at MPG. However, there doesn't appear to be a lateral line.

Moved
Moved from Moths. That was our choice too but we thought it only right to dig through the Lithophane to check. We have no other images of these, so let's keep these until you see it again.

Another possibility is Lithophane fagina
Owlets pg 441, but it is difficult to match the spot patterns

OK, I reviewed the three possibilities (are there more?), and here are my opinions.

1) Not a Paectes, has no lateral line.
2) Not a Lithophane, not the right shape.
3) Balsa malana is my choice: wider in the thoracic area than the others, smaller (less than 2 cm), plus other features.

Agree? Thanks for your input. Really, the images are not that good, so maybe that's all we can do.
