Nepticula maculosella Chambers, 1880 was synonymized with Stigmella nigriverticella (Chambers, 1875) by Braun (1917).

This species has been confused with Stigmella macrocarpae in the past. According to Erik van Nieukerken, S. macrocarpae has a wider pale fascia in the middle of the wing; for example:
