Caterpillar ID? - Dasychira basiflava

Caterpillar ID? - Dasychira basiflava
Doddridge County, West Virginia, USA
June 4, 2007
Size: about 1 1/2"
Found very rapidly moving (hard to focus on it) up a Black Cherry tree. It looks like some kind of Tussock Moth caterpillar, but I had no luck searching. Sorry for the poor quality, this is the best I could do before it was out of reach.

Looks like one of the
Genus Dasychira in the guide here but we'll have to get our book.

It does...
Look like two of the pictures in that genus, the Tephra Tussock. Is this a valid species? Thanks!

Now we remember this guy!
Wagner page 444 lists three similar species. We have seen some images of the species that have clubbed black setae and don't seem to see that here, so we would say D. basiflava, in the guide here, but it seems like we could easily be wrong.

They look very similar...
The black setae don't appear to be clubbed. Since the common name is Yellow-Based Tussock and this one has more apparent yellow, I will move it to that guide page. As always, please feel free to move or frass if it doesn't benefit the guide.

Thanks, John and Jane!
