Thatuna gilletti
Oops, sorry! It's not Errhomus at all - the head is much too short. This species feeds on ninebark (Physocarpus) and the males do, indeed, fly actively to find other bushes. The females are grublike, with very short, triangular wing rudiments. They are hard to spot.

Errhomus male
The females are short-winged, and look quite different from males. (see http://bugguide.net/node/view/24877#18917)
This is the first record of this genus from Sanders Co. There are three species in Montana, all highly localized, so unless this was taken very close to the Missoula County boundary, there is a good chance it is undescribed. Can you send in some specimens? Was it taken on balsamroot, or on some other plant such as lupine?

Thanks Andy,
They were abundant. They were hopping all over our truck, camera equipment, chairs, etc. I didn't see any on the plants. I'm not sure I can send in specimens or not, I'll see if I have the time to go back up there. We are not close to the Missoula County boundary. Gold Rush Campground is 3477 feet 47.523ºN 115.311ºW.
