Identification
Adult: forewing ground color pale brown or gray with light speckling and crossed by three faint wavy lines (sometimes absent); four dark brown marks along costa, and often another dark blotch along postmedial (PM) line near middle of wing; hindwing has similar ground color but no dark markings; head reddish brown; remainder of body similar to wing color
Range
Newfoundland to Georgia, west to Arizona, north to Ontario
Season
adults fly from May to August
Food
larvae feed almost exclusively on pine
