This large fly was found hovering around various flowering bushes, in this case a wild rose. I think this is a Syrphid fly.

This is one of those insects that had to be stalked for several days to get a good photo. I took this photo late in the afternoon after it had cooled down. I happened to glance down in the underbrush and saw this fly resting on a leaf providing the perfect opportunity.
