katydid? with green stripe - Decticita brevicauda - Female
Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin County, California, USA
June 4, 2007
Size: 1 inch
Found in grass in Douglas fir/bishop pine habitat.

going with D. brevicauda, based on location
Appears to still be a nymph.

Moved from Decticita.

This is an adult female
Based on location, pattern, and appearance, it should be D. balli or brevicauda.

Moved

Decticita
This is a female of the genus Decticita. The short, upturned ovipositor is diagnostic. These inhabit grassy areas througout California, usually savanna type situations, and are active during the day.

Tettigoniinae
This is one of the Shield-backe Katydids in the subfamily Tettigoniinae. However it is a young one and it is from California. This makes things difficult, juveniles can be nearly impossible to ID and California is the most diverse area in the US for Shield-backs. In California there are probably close to 50 species with about 1/2 of those being endemic or near endemic.

Outstanding.
Just an outstanding answer, Phil! Wish everyone were so patient and articulate here:-) Hey, can you check out the Texas katydid posted to the Whatsthatbug.com website? I'm totally stumped, and thinking it might be something exotic. You can write to the webmaster if you have an answer. His name is Daniel Marlos.
