Tramea carolina - Male
I believe that is a male T. carolina (Carolina Saddlebags) and not T. onusta (Red Saddlebags). The saddle includes the entire anal loop, the black on segments 8 and 9 is too extensive, and the top of the face is dark purple rather than red.

 
You are right.
The black goes significantly down the side of S8. I should have cleaned my glasses.
