Stiria rugifrons - male

Stiria rugifrons - Male
Miller Canyon, Huachuca Mountains, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
August 13, 2010
Size: Forewing Length 18 mm.
BOLD DNA Analysis ID CMAZA795-10.
The spread specimen at BOLD shows the pale hindwing of the male.

Little genetic separation.
Altough Poole maintained these as separate species in his MONA fascicle (26.1, p. 138-141), he suggested that intermixta "may be" a southwestern race of rugifrons. Moreover, he states that there is overlap in pattern and "genitalia cannot be used to separate the two". BOLD website data now suggests that four specimens in the BIN containing the present specimen (BOLD:ABZ3456) differ from other intermixta by less than 2%. All-in-all this indicates little support for splitting these two species or placing this one in rugifrons.
