Fyn,
P. furcillata
is the most common
Physocephala
in the far north (i.e. Maine and into the Maritime Provinces). Unlike
P. tibialis
, it has a mostly hyaline discal cell. It also has the shortest 1st antennal segment among all species in the genus.
PS: I'm wondering if the milkweed flowers in the photo were wild or cultivated? (I'm guessing the latter.)

Milkweed
Thanks for the milkweed info. It looked like
A. tuberosa
to me (I'm a milkweed fan)...but I wouldn't have thought the natural range of that species would reach as far north as Maine.
However, according to
this LBJ Wildflowers Center web page
it's native distribution extends from:
"Ontario to Newfoundland; New England south to Florida; west to Texas; north through Colorado to Minnesota."
So I guess it is indeed native to Maine. (Lucky you, it's a great plant :-)
