View of the sectioned gall - Andricus quercuscalifornicus

View of the sectioned gall - Andricus quercuscalifornicus
Trail in Stanford University Campus, Palo Alto County, California, USA
October 25, 2015
Size: ~6 cm across
This photo shows the complicated channels inside the gall, besides the two central chambers of the gall causers. They indicate a rich community.
Inside this gall, apart from one newly-emerged adult Andricus quercuscalifornicus wasp, there were several tiny beetle larvae and a predatory stonefly larva.
For more about the parasitoid community of these galls, see this paper.
