Thick Headed Fly - Physocephala texana - female

Thick Headed Fly - Physocephala texana - Female
Selah, Yakima County, Washington, USA
August 19, 2015

Moved
Moved from Conopinae.

Overall reddish color, and location suggest Physocephala texana or P. burgessi...but the latter is more "brick"-red and has reddish cheeks, whereas this is more the red of texana and has the yellow cheek spot of texana. Also, in burgessi, the 1st antennal segment would be noticeably shorter relative to the rest of the antenna.

The large "nub" ("theca") on the 5th sternite indicates a female.
