mantis ootheca
I wonder if this might be Pseudovates arizonae, but the guide has no images of oothecae from that species. Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable about these will respond.

Unicorn
I'd be inclined to agree with you, Chris. This isn't a Stagmomantis ootheca, but looks more like one of the unicorn mantids. I'm not sufficiently learned in them to make a proper ID.
