Red Oak Prairie, Allamakee County, Iowa, USA
October 30, 2015
Size: 2-3 mm
I'm sick! It seems I either wait months and months past the death of a pupa or I manage to disrupt it early, which is what I just did.
My husband found a baggie in the yard, blown off the rearing porch. I set it aside and finally, today, thinking the contents of previous larvae and milled peat were way too dry, I took a closer look. Found several small flies (nematocera) and on the 3rd go through under the scope found what might be a tiny cigar shaped cocoon. Opened it and managed to squish the pupa. But! I found what might be 3 more pupae. Put them into a Charley vial adding a bit of TP and a drop of water and now they are in the fridge. I realize my chances of rearing are near zero but hope springs eternal.

I may have the severed abdomen in the wrong position.
